Chain karaoke box, or Major 99?
A chain karaoke box does one thing, and often does it perfectly well: you get a room, a screen and three hours. The question worth asking is what happens at hour four — when the group is warmed up, hungry, and nobody wants to go home yet. That is the difference this page is about.
We compare by venue type. Nothing here names or ranks another venue, and anything we say about the category generally is written as "often" or "commonly" because chains differ. Last reviewed 17 September 2026.
| What you are comparing | A typical chain karaoke box | Major 99, Ang Mo Kio |
|---|---|---|
| The room | A booth or room by size band, booked by the hour. Often a bright, functional box — good for the singing, not really designed to sit in all night. | Nine private rooms, 4 to 30 pax. The Gold VIP room fits up to 30 and has its own pool table; Silver fits up to 20 and has a foosball table. |
| What it costs to get the room | Commonly an hourly room rate or a per-person-per-hour rate, sometimes with a peak and off-peak split — and at some venues a service charge and GST are added on top of the rate you were quoted. | A minimum spend waives the room charge for 3 hours — S$100 nett for a small room, S$300 nett for a medium, S$500 nett for a VIP room. The minimum goes on the food and drinks you were going to order anyway. |
| Nett or not | Varies a lot by chain. Some are genuinely GST-inclusive; others add service charge and GST at the till, which is where bill shock comes from. | Every price is nett. No GST added, no service charge added — including happy hour prices, so the savings are real. |
| The bar | Often a counter for drinks to bring back to the room, and at some outlets you bring your own food and snacks. | A proper island bar with a full menu — towers, spirits, bar bites — and happy hour 3pm–8pm daily. You can spend the night at the bar and never book a room at all. Strictly 18+ for alcohol. |
| Live music | Not usually part of the format. | Live band nights in the main hall — a different room to go to when your group has sung itself out. |
| Anything else to do | Generally the room is the offering. When the booking ends, the night usually moves somewhere else. | Two pool tables and a party-games table, free to use, plus darts, arcade machines and claw machines (those are pay-per-play). The whole night happens in one building. |
| The song list | The most common complaint people post about any karaoke venue is a song list that has not been refreshed. | Updated song list, English and Mandarin, with serious sound in every room. If something you want is missing, tell the counter — that is how it gets added. 一起唱 |
| Getting there and getting home | Outlet-dependent — some are beside a station, some are a walk or a bus from one. | Beside Ang Mo Kio MRT at #02-02 Broadway Plaza, with parking in the building. Open Sun–Fri 3pm–1am, Sat and eve of public holiday 3pm–2am. |
| Big groups and private hire | Larger groups are usually split across several rooms. | Up to 30 pax in one room, or take the whole venue — the main hall seats 250 and holds 350 standing for a birthday, a company night or a celebration. |
When a chain box is the right call
If you want an hour or two of singing near your house, a family afternoon with kids in the room, or a quick after-work session with no bar tab, a chain outlet is a perfectly good answer and there is probably one closer to you. We are built for the longer version of the night: a room, then a drink, then a game of pool, then one more song.
You are paying for the night, not the room
The room charge is waived once your group reaches the minimum spend for that room size — S$100 nett small, S$300 nett medium, S$500 nett VIP, across three hours. Because our prices are nett, the number on the menu is the number that counts towards it.

Planning something bigger than a room?
Birthdays for 50, a department night, a company D&D — the main hall seats 250 for dinner and holds 350 standing, with a stage, full AV and an LED screen. Venue packages start at S$2,800 nett and catering is quoted separately from S$20/pax. The worked cost example shows exactly how the numbers add up.
