Club function room, or Major 99?

Club function rooms are the default shortlist for a company D&D, town hall or year-end party — they are familiar, they are big, and somebody on the committee is usually a member. This page sets out where a function-room booking and a Major 99 booking genuinely differ, so you can compare the two on the same basis.

We compare by venue type, not by name. Nothing here describes any particular club, and every claim about what is common in the category is sourced and dated, or written as "often" and "commonly". Last reviewed 17 September 2026.

Side by side — a typical club function room vs Major 99
What you are comparingA typical club function roomMajor 99, Ang Mo Kio
Capacity once the tables, aisles and stage are in Headline capacity is often the empty-room figure. Function spaces commonly feel cramped "once tables, service aisles, and a stage are installed" (getout.sg year-end venue checklist, read 17 Sep 2026). Ask for the seated number with a stage. 250 seated for dinner, 350 standing — with the stage in place, because the stage is permanent. Corporate events run 20–350 pax depending on layout and package.
Pricing basis Commonly quoted plus-plus. A 10% service charge and 9% GST add "approximately 20% to the quoted price" (getout.sg D&D cost guide, read 17 Sep 2026). Pricing structures also differ — minimum spend, flat rate or per pax — which makes quotes hard to line up. Nett, always. No GST added, no service charge added. A flat venue package (from S$2,800 nett) plus catering quoted separately from S$20/pax. Two lines, both nett.
AV, stage and LED screen Often an add-on: an AV package, a hired stage, and a technician whose hours are counted separately. Organisers are commonly caught out by not knowing who owns the AV and emcee hours (getout.sg, read 17 Sep 2026). Included in every package — permanent stage, full AV and the LED screen, run by our own team. One point of contact from booking to event night.
Getting there Club premises are often away from an MRT station, and shuttle buses for less accessible venues commonly cost S$300–800 per bus (getout.sg, read 17 Sep 2026). Parking charges can appear late in the quote. Beside Ang Mo Kio MRT, #02-02 Broadway Plaza, with parking in the building and lift access to our floor. No shuttle line item.
After the dinner ends The function room's hours end and the group usually splits up to find somewhere else. Running over commonly costs S$500–2,000 per additional hour (getout.sg, read 17 Sep 2026). The second half of the night is already in the building — private karaoke rooms, the bar, live band nights, two pool tables and a party-games table, free to use all night. Nobody re-books a Grab. (18+ for anything served from the bar.)
Exclusive use Usually one room inside a building that keeps operating — members, other functions, shared lobby, lifts and toilets. Genuine exclusivity is rarely on offer. Full-Premises Booking from S$13,000 nett, guideline from 150 pax: all nine private rooms, three pool tables including the one inside the Gold room, and no public admitted for the duration.
Corkage Commonly S$30–50 per bottle, roughly S$600–1,000 on a 200-pax event (getout.sg, read 17 Sep 2026). Waived on up to 6 bottles of wine on an Evening Company Event. House wine also converts one-for-one against your included beer towers at no extra cost.
Quote turnaround Varies. Organisers are commonly advised to get three quotations and compare like for like, which is slow when the quotes come back on different bases (getout.sg, read 17 Sep 2026). Where a club function room is the better answer

If your event needs a formal ballroom setting, a daytime conference layout for several hundred, sports or swimming facilities on the same site, or a member rate your company already pays for, a club is a sensible booking and we will say so. We are a karaoke, bar and events venue — the case for us is the whole-night-in-one-building format, the nett pricing and the MRT door, not a banquet hall.

Compare it properly, in three questions

  1. Is the quote nett or plus-plus? Convert both to the same basis before you put them in a spreadsheet. Ours is already nett.
  2. What is the seated capacity with the stage in? Not the empty-room number.
  3. What time must we be out, and what does the hour after cost? Get both times in writing.

The full version of that habit is our 12-question D&D venue checklist, and the arithmetic is on what a D&D actually costs — worked for 150 and 250 guests.
